A dark-robed traveler sleeps beside her mandolin while a lion sniffs her face under a flat full moon. Rousseau, a self-taught customs clerk, offered to sell it to his hometown mayor for 200 francs; he was politely declined.

Rousseau's final completed work: a nude Yadwigha reclines on a Second Empire sofa that floats through a moonlit jungle of invented foliage, a snake charmer piping behind. He insisted the sofa's incongruity was perfectly explained by the word 'dream.'
