Colorful Realm of Living Beings
Colorful Realm of Living Beings
Edo Japan · Itō Jakuchū · c. 1760
Thirty silk hanging scrolls — phoenixes, roosters, peonies, carp — painted in pigments so refined that individual feathers are rendered in rows of ungleibert circles. Jakuchū gave the cycle as a meditation on impermanence to his local temple.
