The Elephant Celebes
The Elephant Celebes
Max Ernst · 1921 · Tate Modern
A giant metallic elephant based on a photograph of a Sudanese corn bin looms over a headless mannequin beside a mysterious fish-stalk. Ernst's breakthrough Surrealist work, painted before André Breton had even coined the term.
